Same-day and 24/7 emergency air conditioner repair across Greater Rochester. Family-owned since 1989.
When an air conditioner quits in July, the question is not which brand you own. It is how quickly someone can get to you and whether they will be straight with you about what it needs.
Dalton has repaired air conditioning across Greater Rochester since 1989. We carry the parts that fail most often on the truck, which means a large share of calls are fixed on the first visit rather than turning into a two-day wait for a capacitor.
Victor, Pittsford, Fairport, Penfield, Henrietta and West Henrietta, Honeoye Falls, Canandaigua, Farmington, Mendon, Brighton, Chili and North Chili, Churchville, Hamlin, Hilton, Clarkson and Spencerport, plus the surrounding Monroe, Ontario and Wayne County communities.
If your system is past the point of economic repair we will say so rather than sell you a patch. See AC replacement for what a new system involves, or AC maintenance if you want to stop the breakdowns happening in the first place.

Most homeowners want a number before they call. Exact pricing depends on the fault, the system and the parts required, and we confirm the cost with you before any work starts. The ranges below are typical for the Rochester area and cover the repairs we see most often.
| Common repair | What is involved | Typical Rochester cost |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | Full system check and a written cause, credited against the repair | $95 – $175 |
| Capacitor replacement | The single most common failure. Unit hums but the fan will not start | $175 – $400 |
| Contactor replacement | Burnt or pitted contacts stopping the outdoor unit energising | $175 – $375 |
| Refrigerant leak find and repair | Locate the leak, repair, evacuate and recharge to spec | $300 – $1,500 |
| Condenser fan motor | Outdoor fan not turning, system overheating and tripping out | $350 – $750 |
| Blower motor | No airflow at the vents with the outdoor unit running | $450 – $1,100 |
| Evaporator coil replacement | Major repair. Often the point where replacement is worth pricing | $900 – $2,800 |
| Compressor replacement | The most expensive repair. Rarely worth it out of warranty | $1,500 – $3,200 |
Two things worth knowing. A capacitor sits at the cheap end of that table, so if you are quoted a full system replacement for a unit that only hums, get a second opinion. And if your system still runs on R-22, refrigerant alone now costs enough that a significant leak usually shifts the math toward replacement rather than repair.
Running but not cooling. Most often a clogged filter, a frozen evaporator coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failed capacitor. Switch the system off so it does not ice up further, check the filter, and call. Running a frozen system turns a small repair into a compressor.
Blowing warm air. Check the thermostat is on COOL and not just FAN, then check the outdoor breaker. If both are right it is usually refrigerant or the compressor circuit.
Outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin. Classic capacitor failure. It is one of the cheapest repairs on the list and one of the most commonly used to justify an unnecessary replacement.
Water around the indoor unit. Usually a blocked condensate drain rather than anything serious, though a frozen coil thawing will do the same thing.
Short-cycling. Turning on and off every few minutes points to an oversized system, a dirty filter restricting airflow, or a refrigerant charge problem.
Grinding or squealing. Turn the system off. Bearing and motor noises get more expensive the longer they run.
A reasonable rule for a Rochester home: if the system is under 10 years old, repair it. Between 10 and 15, weigh the repair cost against what a replacement would cost over the years you have left. Past 15, or if the compressor or evaporator coil has failed, price a replacement before spending on a major repair.
R-22 systems are the exception. Refrigerant cost alone often makes a leak repair poor value regardless of age. We will give you both numbers and let you decide. Sometimes the honest answer is that a small repair buys you another two seasons, and that is fine.
